Colorado College team impacts college policy by implementing a race, gender, and ethics course requirement for CS majors

Janet Burge, Ph.D., and Cory Scott, Ph.D., Cultural Competence in Computing (3C) Fellows, proposed a policy change to their department's requirements at Colorado College. The proposed change would require students to take a class that covers ethics issues before declaring computer science as their major. The Colorado College Committee on Instruction reviewed the proposal, and the proposal passed an all-faculty vote. The required courses cover issues of race, gender, or ethics and are primarily offered in the college's REMS (Race, Ethnicity, and Migration Studies) and Sociology departments, which allows Dr. Burge and Dr. Scott to work more closely with those departments. Dr. Burge is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Colorado College. Dr. Scott is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Colorado College.
